The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) mandates a mini-project on extensive survey work, carried out by 5th-semester students during the vacation period before the commencement of the 6th semester. This project includes five key components:
Water is an essential resource for human survival, serving both domestic and irrigation purposes.Rural irrigation needs can be met by constructing a new tank using locally available homogeneous materials. The tank is designed to store water efficiently, with sluices provided to release water downstream for light irrigation.
For old tank projects, it is the responsibility of the Gram Panchayat, in collaboration with the Zilla Panchayat (Z.P.) and Minor Irrigation (M.I.) departments, to regularly maintain tanks. Maintenance tasks include restoring embankments, repairing aprons at the waste weir site, relining the revetment, desilting the tank, and maintaining the bund’s top width and height to enhance water storage capacity.
Ensuring rural hygiene and providing safe drinking water is vital for community health. This can be achieved by constructing a ground-level storage reservoir, supplied by borewells with a good yield. Additionally, mini water supply schemes are implemented in various localities, and sanitation is improved through the introduction of dustbins, washing platforms, and a twin-pit latrine system.
A reconnaissance survey was conducted by project guides and students to determine the best road alignments in the village. Improved road connectivity plays a crucial role in socio-economic development by enabling the transport of people and agricultural produce to Taluk and district headquarters. Existing village roads have been upgraded under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
The students carried out a survey to develop a residential layout over 2 acres of open land using a closed traverse method. The plots were marked with dimensions of 9m x 12m and 12m x 18m, with a 9m-wide road network. Provisions were made within the layout for parks and public amenities such as a dispensary, post office, and other essential services.
